A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
