Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
