In the dying moments, sheer ecstasy erupted for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández bundled in a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and gifted the temporary Chelsea manager a truly golden moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane was the Premier League's most pronounced managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old for years to come.

A Glaring Contrast in Experience

On the home bench was the most decorated manager of his time, a man with an unparalleled CV for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a one-time trainer at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had worked in City's own academy and stepped up to make his first-team debut after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, most notably Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed Mission: Impossible.

“Whirlwind” was the adjective McFarlane used to describe his experience since being thrust into the role.

Another key part of his blueprint was to disrupt at every turn. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea delayed at a dead ball, a sure sign the City's tempo was being broken up and the Guardiola plan was being frustrated.

The battle grew increasingly fractious, with Delap booked after a scuffle, and City's defensive pillars, Rúben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, both forced off injured. Despite further Chelsea pressure, a second goal seemed to be eluding them, with Cole Palmer unable to get a touch in front of goal.
